Modifications used in a 4th grade science class used with students with a variety of learning styles.

| This 4th grade class are studying plants. Boardmaker (Don Johnston) graphics printed on cardstock and laminated, with Velcro attached, provides graphics that can be physically manipulated to arrange plant parts and make a combination of sentences relative to content material presented in class. | All students are asked to draw a plant and label the parts. Foam shapes are used to add another dimension for this student. The parts are labeled using Writing with Symbols 2000 (Widgit). | ||

| A study of trees and their parts allows exploration of sections of a tree trunk. Use of a magnifying glass will allow students to examine the wood, and the various textures provide some sensory stimulation. Different kinds of wood stimulate our senses. A visit outside the classroom to search for trees provides further opportunities for learning and sensory input. | After exploring the section of tree trunk, corrugated card is used to create the idea of the concentric rings and add textures to the process. This facilitates discussion on textures, size, number etc. | ||

This sheet is printed from the Internet (EnchantedLearning.com)
for use in the classroom. Outline drawings such as these are
available for a modest annual fee through the site. It provides basic information about
an insect corresponding to material presented in class. |
A textured insect is created using the graphic as a guide (EnchantedLearning.com, available for a modest annual fee). A variety of materials are used such as foam sheet and twigs, and then the parts are labeled using symbols created with Writing with Symbols 2000 (Widgit). Insects are also available in the classroom for a closer look.
| Students are encouraged to look at real insects and explore large life-like insects. This exploration gives opportunities for discussion on body parts as discussed in class, sorting, matching and categorizing. | Writing is something that all students are expected to do. Writing using symbols facilitates this process. A student is completing a sentence using a prepared grid clicking on the correct word to complete the sentence. | ||
