The Pre-Institute features a full day of training sessions with presenters and topics nationally recognized as being important to infant and toddler professionals. When you register for the Pre-Institute, you will be asked to choose one of the following topics.

Creating a Quality Home Environment
This session will cover Kentucky's current policies and procedures for in-home child care programs. The main emphasis of the session will be on how to create and maintain a quality home environment for young children in care (some sub-topics that will be included are organization, curriculum, safety, activities, and furnishings).

Family Mental Health:Turning Realities into Parenting Success
A 3-in-one workshop addressing the realities of family mental health and the influence on the Parent-Child Relationship (PCR). The overall purpose of this workshop is to share how home visitors (or others) can strenghen the positive areas of PCR to counter the negative effects of mental health issues.

Family Involvement that Matters: Lessons from Research and Practice
Regulations and standards conceptualize family participation and engagement with programs in various ways, but what really matters? This session will provide a framework for conceptualizing and broadening our definition of family involvement.

It's All About the Interactions: Standards, Curriculum, and Assessment Coming Together for Babies and Toddlers
What do standards, curriculum, and assessment look like in the day-to-day world of infant/toddler care? Do these abstract-sounding words really make sense when working with our youngest children? Yes, they do--when we see them through the eyes of babies and toddlers. Using video and small-group activities, we'll plan ways to incorporate Kentucky's standards, curriculum, and assessment guidelines into daily practice.

Learning to Breathe Again: Resilient Reactions to a Serious Diagnosis
Having dealt with her own son’s diagnosis of autism for more than a decade, Mary Donnet Johnson has made an in-depth study of what it takes to find the flipside of challenges and create true happiness out of even the darkest moments. This seminar is perfect for parents and professionals – anyone who would like to learn to take better care of themselves first in order to be able to have the most positive effect on a child with challenges.
