Parent Information and Training

 

Family Resource and Youth Service Centers (FRSCYs) were established by the Kentucky Education Reform Act to provide assistance to families in parent training, child care, and linking families and students to needed community services. FRSCYs provide services to families of both children with and without disabilities, and are located within individual schools in each school district. KY SPIN: Kentucky's Parent Information and Training Network provides families with information on best practices for children and youth with disabilities and fosters collaborative relationships with families and other organizations representing individuals with disabilities. Kentucky Disabilities Coalition represents 115 member organizations focused on the needs of individuals with disabilities. The Coalition provides information to families and individuals, and advocates at the state and federal level for legislation and policies consistent with the needs of individuals with disabilities and their families. Parent Resource Centers (PRCs) are established by the Kentucky Department of Education specifically to address the needs of families who have children with disabilities. There are 25 such centers statewide. Each PRC is located within an individual school or local school district office. Partners in Policymaking is an intensive training project designed to provide family members of children with disabilities and individuals with disabilities with a knowledge of both best practices and advocacy skills, so that they may be better able to advocate on their own behalf and for other persons with disabilities who have similar needs. Advocacy

 

Division of Protection and Advocacy (P & A) is the state agency officially designated by the federal Developmental Disabilities Act to safeguard the rights of individuals with disabilities and their families (800-372-2988).

Assistive Technology

 

Kentucky Assistive Technology Services (KATS) Network provides assistance to individuals, families, and school systems in meeting the assistive technology needs of individuals with disabilities and coordinates the activities of four regional technology centers in the Commonwealth. Technology Tools for Transition from School to Community provides assistance to young adults with developmental disabilities, their families, and other members of transition planning teams in successfully integrating technology services and supports into the transition planning process from school to adult life. Inclusive Education and Collaboration

 

Collaborative Teaching Model Training provides training to both regular and special educators in implementing collaborative teaching for both children with and without disabilities.
