2004 Mini Grant Program

Deadline to submit grant application is January 2, 2004

Kentucky GROW is a project that introduces individuals with and without disabilities to horticulture and gardening in inclusive settings.

Adaptive gardens utilizing universal design and assistive technology can include techniques like square foot and container gardening as well as raised beds, vertical growing methods and many other techniques. The Kentucky GROW Project has five pilot sites across Kentucky. Locations of these sites are the Master Gardener's Garden at Paducah, UK-LFUCG Arboretum in Lexington, House for All Ages at Somerset, Campbell County Extension Office Educational Gardens and Carl D. Perkins Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center at Paintsville.

Funding was provided by Kentucky GROW for garden development at these sites. Kentucky GROW recognizes that significant portions of the state are not covered by these five locations and a large number of potential participants will not have access to Kentucky GROW activities. Therefore the Mini Grant Program was designed to provide funds for other locations to develop inclusive, accessible adaptive gardens and other horticulture activities. These funds must be used for Promotion and Demonstration of gardening/horticulture activities in an inclusive setting. Funded sites will collect and maintain data including the total number of participants, number of participants with disabilities and activities conducted.

Approved Projects may receive the following:

1. Up to $750.00 per project with a 100% match. The match may include cash and/or in-kind contributions such as labor or donations. Match may not include the value of the land, building(s) or existing structures.

2. Additional funding is available in the following priority areas:

A. Plant Breeding/ Seed Production - $250 with 100% match.
B. Landscape/ Lawn Maintenance - $250 with 100% match.
C. Greenhouse/ Cold Frame Production - $250 with 100% match.

A total of five (5) projects will be funded provided at least five eligible applications are received. Funding for any one proposal cannot exceed $1000.
