Hopkins County Central High School"Providing a Night of Good Food and Good Fun!" Upon entering the Hopkins County Central High School
on a Thursday afternoon, one could immediately observe that students
are learning as they host a banquet for the senior citizens of the community.
By the decorated tables, interactions with their guests, and live entertainment
it is evident that students take pride in themselves and their school.
The question is, “just who are those students learning and actively
working at their school?” There are sure to be others, but one
can rest assured that the students and peer tutors from Virginia McGregor’s
special education class learn by serving the citizens of their community.
Once a month, the students have committed to hosting a Young at Heart Banquet for Hopkins County’s senior citizens. From a bystander’s observations, it was clear at this Young at Heart Banquet that the students had major roles in decorating, greeting the guests, serving food and drinks, and providing entertainment. When decorating, the students assisted in beautifying the greeters table with pastel table covers, paper accents, and a sign-in sheet and setting up the tables and chairs. Also, the students served the guests by refilling beverages, throwing away their trash, and handing out cake.
Finally, one of the students provided entertainment by
playing the guitar as he sang five to six songs. The principal and an
assistant principal were also present to support the students in their
collective endeavor.
