AUDIENCE
Employment Specialists who have not previously attended the SETP CORE TRAINING are required to attend Session 1 and Session 2. All are welcome! Please note registration deadlines.
NOTE: Not required to attend? Been before? We hope you'll consider attending again. There are always new things to learn by studying updated methods and by sharing strategies with others. Plus new personnel always benefit from attending workshops with people who have been in the field.

TOPICS
Day 1 - SE Values, History, and Overview We'll begin by exploring the values and principles that underlie our work. Then we'll take a look at the big picture -- ways that supported employment services flow and fit together, and ways that personalized approaches can make all of the difference.
Day 2 - Person Centered Job Selection What's a good job for this person, and how do we know? How might we discover personal gifts and talents previously unrecognized? What are fitting types of work formerly unconsidered? Person-Centered Job Selection (derived from the Vocational Profile) provides the foundation for all supported employment services that follow. This day will focus on the process of Person Centered Job Selection including: • planning personalized approaches, • writing a report, • convening interested others to think about fitting kinds of work, and • using what's learned to get ready for job development.
Day 3 – Job Development After we know the kind of job we're seeking, then how do we find it? What are varied ways that we might represent the people we serve? What might their roles be? What about disclosure of one's disability? In job development we'll hit the ground running with information learned during Person Centered Job Selection. The day will investigate: • customized jobs, • contacting employers, • employer incentives, • answering employer objections, • developing public relations materials, and more.

TOPICS
Day 1 – Job Analysis In Session 1 we examined the importance of devoting time to know the job seeker, and then developing/negotiating fitting job opportunities. Today we'll learn about taking the next step – moving from job development to job analysis: • Deciding whether or not to do a job analysis within a particular business, • Studying the workplace culture, and learning about areas of particular importance, • Learning the typical employee training/support practices within a business, • Defining the roles of the SE Employment Specialist in a way that honors typical business practices to the fullest extent possible, • Collecting information needed to negotiate a customized job. The day will include a visit to an area business or industry to practice the principles studied. (Participants will need to wear professional attire for the job analysis field experience.)
Day 2 – Putting the Pieces Together This day will focus on further application of SE services including: • Information about OVR including billing processes and services in addition to SE, • Planning for success and problem solving when things don’t go as planned, • Additional practice with written documentation.
*Day 3 - Impact of Wages on Benefits What will happen to my check when I go to work? Will I lose my Medicaid? These are common questions that require clear answers. This day of training will provide basic information on Social Security Work Incentives including: • How people are determined to be eligible for social security benefits, • Differences in SSI and SSDI, • SSI and SSDI work incentives -- the very different ways that wages impact these benefits, • How wages impact Medicaid (for SSI recipients), • Determining Medicaid "client liability, share of cost" for people served by SCL programs, and more. TOPICS
Kim Davis, Research Associate/Autism Consultant
Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, Indiana Resource Center for Autism
"A Challenge to Reframe Our Thinking:
The Impact of Movement Difference and Sensory Challenges
on the Abilities of Individuals with Autism"
Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological disorder that impacts each individual differently.
For some individuals there may be sensory processing difficulties; for others movement
differences may challenge participation. Both sensory and movement difference
challenges can impact communication, the ability to control body movements and how
one relates to the environment. Any of these can be interpreted as challenging behaviors.
By focusing on the symptoms of movement difference and the dynamic system, participants
will see how our perception of movement and sensory differences can impact
our perception of people diagnosed with ASD.
This presentation will discuss both movement differences and sensory integrations challenges
including auditory, visual, tactile, gustatory, olfactory, vestibular and proprioceptive
challenges. The presenter will discuss the impact movement differences have on the
individual and share methods or personalizing strategies and accommodations that assist
the individual to regulate control or change a movement.
Bev Harp, Autism Advocate
"Autism in Context: An Overview for Supported Employment Professionals"
Autism is a widely discussed, though little understood, condition. Persons on the autism
spectrum continue to experience unemployment at high rates, even in comparison to
people with other disabilities. Most employers are uncertain what to expect from such
employees, and are likely to have been exposed to negative stereotypes. This presentation,
by a social worker with Asperger syndrome, incorporates personal experience with
recent literature in the field. Attendees will learn a variety of ways to present autism to
employers and to work with people on the autism spectrum.
