Paraeducator Certificate Program

The Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) offers the Paraeducator Certificate Program. The Paraeducator Certificate Program is designed to prepare students to successfully complete the Kentucky Paraeducator Assessment or Kentucky Department of Education approved alternative assessment. Paraeducators who wish to earn a two-year degree may complete the (AAS) Teacher Associate program.

The Paraeducator Certificate Program consists of 15-18 hours of college level coursework designed to prepare students to work as paraeducators in the public schools. Current course topics include orientation to education, child and adolescent development, working with students with special needs, behavior management, computer literacy, and a capstone internship course in which a student spends 150 hours assisting in a classroom mentored by the teacher and course instructor.

The average student enrollment in the BCTC Paraeducator courses is 65 students each semester. Many of the students enrolled are already working as paraeducators, seeking to improve their current skills.

The Spring 2010 semester begins January 11, 2010. Click on the following link for the list of all education programs at BCTC, including the Paraeducator Certificate Program: http://www.bluegrass.kctcs.edu/bsd/education/curricula/
