The Human Development Institute's Core Training Program (CTP) has developed training materials and a system for delivering quality introductory training on disabilities which: This training program assists in providing staff of community agencies serving individuals with disabilities with a foundation of positive values and basic competencies necessary to successfully perform their job functions. The program was developed with funds from the Kentucky Developmental Disabilities Planning Council. Program implementation is funded by the Kentucky Division of Mental Retardation through contract with the University of Kentucky Human Development Institute, a University Affiliated Program.


The Core Training Program includes the following core courses:

  1. Introduction to Mental Retardation and Other Developmental Disabilities Values, Issues and Resources
  2. Working With Families
  3. Developing Individualized Plans
  4. Instructional and Behavioral Techniques
  5. Health Needs and Services
  6. Social/Sexual Training Needs and Approaches
  7. Medications Administration

Training is scheduled and coordinated by the Institute with completion of the training program taking approximately 51 hours. The Core Training Program allows community agency staff the opportunity to receive training on individual choice and inclusion, as well as best practice approaches to providing services and supports.
