Preservice Health Training Modules

Screen sshot of the interactive training module Project Overview

Using a virtual patient approach, the Kentucky Preservice Health Training project was designed to train medical, allied health, dental and nursing students about the needs of patients with developmental disabilities.

Funded by the Kentucky Council on Developmental Disabilities, the project has developed training on the needs of persons with developmental disabilities that can be infused into existing course work.

A total of 7 modules have been developed in the series, including two medical modules, two nurse practitioner/physician assistant modules, two dental modules, and one interdisciplinary women’s health module.

Each Virtual Patient Module is made up an interactive case, decision points positioned appropriately in the module, information points, resources, pre-and post knowledge and attitude measures, and an instructor’s manual. In every case, modules were developed by participating university faculty in the core disciplines, experts in developmental disabilities, and most importantly, individuals with developmental disabilities and family members.
